    MALACCA - The 336 buyers of apartments at the public housing programme in Sungai Putat, Batu Berendam, here got a welcome surprise from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak yesterday.

    "The actual price of an apartment unit is RM148,000 (S$61,570), but the government hereby wishes to announce that the units will be sold at RM35,000 each," Najib said to the applause of those present at a ceremony to hand over offer letters to the would-be-occupants.

  • Ah Chong Arowana declared world's top breed by international body

    It's official -- the highly prized Malaysian golden arowana has been declared as the best golden arowana species in the world by an international body.

    CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species and Wild Fauna and Flora) had certified the species, which was unique to Malaysia, as the best, Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir said.

    Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has become the "most followed" Malaysian politician on Twitter, with over 419,000 followers to date, reported the Wall Street Journal.

    The paper noted that the number of Najib followers surpassed Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's by more than three times.

    The Hokkien culture and dialect in Malaysia is more vibrant than its birthplace - China.

    French anthropologist Fiorella Allio noted that the Hokkiens in Malaysia had preserved their culture and language better and that they were similar to that in ancient China.

    "There is not much distortion in the way the culture is preserved and the dialect spoken here is authentic.

    "In China, the tradition of the Hokkien people is somewhat skewed due to various reasons, and this was brought to its pinnacle during the height of the Communist era," she said at the Yong Chuan Tian Temple at Bandar Hilir here, yesterday.

    With Valentine's Day due in a week, PAS has again pledged to put a stop to the celebration.

    Its leaders, including PAS Youth chief Nasrudin Hassan at-Tantawi, said it must be stopped as it would lead to immoral activities.

  • Ah Chong GEORGE TOWN: A small crowd of 10 people staged a peaceful protest this afternoon against Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim’s alleged support for the security of Israel.

    Chanting anti-Anwar slogans and waving a Palestine flag, the protesters, including a masked man claiming to be an active PAS member, gathered for about 20 minutes.

    The protesters described Anwar’s statement as a “betrayal of Islam, the Malays and country’s stand against Israel”.
